Storing your BMW for winter the smart way

Although we do have some of the greatest weather in the U.S., we know some BMW and MINI convertible owners prefer to keep their “baby” indoors during our winter weather.

If you are garaging it for the winter or using a car cover, do so only after your BMW or MINI convertible has been washed. You do not want to park it with any dirt or debris such as leaves or pine needles on it. That can eventually ruin not just that beautiful paint finish, but especially that canvas top.

Vacuum the top thoroughly, then use a convertible top cleaner and protectant such as those made by Raggtopp, Meguiars, or BMW Car Care Products, (and always their specific product application directions). The rear plastic/PVC window is very susceptible to scratches if not handled correctly. Some top guys suggest that you never touch the plastic with your bare hands or skin. Rinse plastic window lightly with water or used compressed air to remove any grit or dirt before washing with a very soft clean microfiber cloth. After washing it may need to to be detailed with a specialized plastic polish. Follow with a vinyl protectant to extend the clarity of your plastic convertible window.

Never store your convertible in the top down position. This could result in some permanent markings on your top. Most wear begins at those fold lines or the stitching. It’s not as fun, but, keeping your canvas BMW convertible top up will make it last longer.
