Clunkers – destruction of mechanical art
One New York Times report over the weekend cited a BMW 1988, 535iS, with 214 thousand miles on it that was being being “put to death”. That was a beautiful, and somewhat rare piece of machinery that was now called a “Clunker”. They even had to pour a sodium silicate solution into that workhorse engine to make it seize! Seriously, it made a few of us BMW enthusiasts/techs, get sick just reading the description of the “execution”. A solid, gorgeous, beautiful engine being ruined on purpose, (for a few thousand bucks). Makes you wanna cry.
