Investigative approach to warranties

Some clients are purchasing “extended warranties” for their BMW’s. We are referring to warranty companies that are not affiliated with BMW, so that you have the choice of where to take your car for service and are not required to return to the dealership. This would be an an Extended Warranty Contract, that is underwritten by an insurance company.

If you decide to purchase one of these Extended Warranty’s, be sure to read it completely, and understand what it covers and what it does not. Terms like, “bumper to bumper” and “lifetime”, may mean something completely different, (to them) vs. what you may expect. Be especially careful and examine the “mileage” and “time” limitations and/or expirations. We have not seen any exceptions made when out of either of those parameters.

Since it is an insurance policy, be sure to do your due diligence and check out the company’s credentials, as you would with any other policy you may purchase for you or your family. There could also be a cap as to what the warranty company will pay for specific repairs. As the owner of the vehicle and the contract, you would be responsible to pay the difference, (if any), if the work is authorized. (Just like at the dentist)!

We can deal directly with your extended warranty company to get as much covered for you as your contract allows. It does take some extra effort on our part to make this happen. If you have ever had to deal with an insurance company, you realize it is not the easiest process to get a claim handled. But, we do go “to bat” for you in several ways; First, by meeting with the adjuster when they physically look at your BMW, (while we have it apart if they so choose), and we also provide any other specific and reasonable documentation that they require. (Sometimes they want 15 pages)!

Some of our customers are telling us, that not every shop is wanting to work with extended warranty companies. So, always ask your shop’s service advisor at the time you make your appointment, if they will work with your warranty company.

Because in this situation as described above, besides fixing your BMW, there will be other warranty processes going on in the background, (doing our best to be sure that you get your money’s worth). Let us know if we can help!
