The check engine light, (service engine soon light), is probably one of the most misunderstood items on cars these days. These have been around for decades now, so it’s not new stuff. As the increased monitoring of the various systems in your BMW, (and their proper function), is taking place, it is designed to warn you of a possible failure, or a component that is out of specifications, (or tolerances), etc.. But, it may be surprising to many drivers that there are literally hundreds of possible causes when that light turns on! Remember, the fix, is not the “light”. We, (or another qualified shop), are diagnosing a failure of an item (or a condition), that created a fault in the system, making the light turn on.

Here we are in Silicon Valley, the undisputed hot bed of technology. OK, maybe if you’re from Seattle, or Austin, you’d want to argue this one. But, the point is, please, get just a little more knowledgeable about the systems on your BMW or MINI. This will help you understand what is going on when that “light” comes on, especially in your later model BMW. Sure, it is a lot to review, but always read your manual. And, don’t be afraid to ask questions of technically experienced BMW service people. They should be glad to help.

Whatever you do, don’t ignore that light coming on! We can educate all day long, but if you really don’t want to know, well…….
