Taking care of fans
Check out your fan clutch! Mmmm….a fan clutch? Yes, this is just another part of that cooling system in your BMW. Your fan clutch plays a very important part in keeping your BMW cool. Failure of this component would result in an overheat condition that could damage your engine. It is designed to allow your engine to warm up quickly, reduce horsepower drain on the engine, reduces drag, and therefore improves engine efficiency.
A previous post reminded you to get your car checked out for warmer weather driving and fan clutch operation should be one of those items that is working properly. Unlike some of the plastic/composite/rubbery items that are part of your cooling system, the fan clutch does not “crack” or “break” apart. But, it will cease to work enough to keep your engine cool, or in a worse case, it may just stop all together. At that point, your engine could become overheated and severe damage may result.
Please, have a qualified tech check this out for you. There are some subtle signs of performance deterioration that your tech may detect, (before you drive off and overheat). Always pay attention to your temp gauge. A BMW engine is a terrible thing to waste.
