The variants on electric cars keeps growing, as BMW leaks a few more details about it’s ActiveE car to be leased, (only about 1000) in the U.S. next fall. It is based on the 1 Series and actually seats passengers in the rear vs. batteries in that space. It will have a lithium ion battery that will travel 100 miles on a charge and we are hearing that top speed will be about 90 miles per hour.

This will give BMW another another contender in the electric vehicle arena, besides the MINI E and the MCV, (aka the Mega City Vehicle). The MCV will be produced in 2013. If you haven’t seen it, well, imagine a carbon fiber golf cart. The ActiveE is much more stylish and we expect it will attract a different buyer than the MCV, which you can pretty much figure out is intended for crowded cityscape driving.

We should be seeing this ActiveE beauty next month at the Geneva Motor Show. It will be very interesting to see how they continue to lighten up these electric vehicles to get the most distance and efficiency out of battery power.

The race continues….
