Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – The Car Show
Some of the great summer events in the Bay Area are upon us with wonderful car shows, auctions, races and more. One of the most famous auto events in our area is the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance that takes place Sunday, August 19th.
The Pebble Beach Auction presented by Gooding and Company on August 18th and 19th, 2012, will have a very special Mercedes up for public auction for the first time –the elegant, all black, 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster–once owned by Baroness Gisela von Krieger of Prussia. The current owner (who is only the 3rd caretaker of the beautiful vehicle) commissioned a complete restoration and actually won the Best of Class honor in the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours ‘d Elegance.
The car had been delivered new to the Kriegers in 1936 sporting the family crest which had been hand painted on the driver and passenger doors. The Baroness thankfully took the car out of the country as she traveled in France, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Many of the great autos of that time period did not survive Nazi occupation and were confiscated by the military. The Mercedes 540K Special Roadster is considered one of the most significant prewar Mercedes Benz autos in existence, if not the most significant. The car was stored away in a garage for about 40 years and was basically a time capsule as it held some of the Baroness’ private possessions. Besides its elegance and beauty, the history of the car is very compelling.
The weeks that lead up to the Concours d’Elegance are full of great car events. It is casually called Monterey Car Week, and some events are exceptionally organized and costly to attend, and others are free and open to the public. Just a drive to Monterey that weekend will be a looki-loo event for car buffs of all types as many hotel parking lots are full of beautiful and special cars. Many can be seen motoring down Highway 1. After all, they have to get there, too!
If you have never been, you may want to check it out.
