Feeling just right – cool and anti-frozen
Growing up in the Midwest as a very young kid, one would think of anti-freeze, as just that. Something that kept your car from freezing! Of course, by the time we were almost old enough to drive legally, we discovered the complexities of anti-freeze and it’s essential work of keeping your engine running “cool” and not overheating.
Always use BMW anti-freeze, (engine coolant) to keep your system working properly. It is phosphate free and that avoids aluminum oxidation. Aluminum oxidation can cause failure of radiators, it can block cylinder head coolant passages and that can cause head gasket failure. So much pain can be avoided!
As we get into the warmer summertime driving routine, be sure that you have the entire cooling system checked. It may even be time for a complete coolant flush. Once again, these recommended intervals have lengthened as BMW has decided to include the “no maintenance” aka “free maintenance” (which of course is really pre-paid because it has got to be in the price of the new car). This seems to be the opinion of so many of our long term, BMW lovin’ clients who are old school, but motoring along quite happily.
We will test your anti-freeze to be sure that the additive package/coolant has not deteriorated and out of spec, before we recommend a coolant flush. Most of the time that turns out to be about every 2 years.
