Intermittent Electrical Bugs

There are times when we would all love it if an intermittent electrical problem would “heal” itself. Unfortunately, some drivers seem to believe that it will “just go away” if they wait long enough.  Well, it’s true the check engine on the dash will sometimes turn off if you keep driving, but that does not mean that your BMW or MINI healed it’s problem.

All the while fault codes are being stored, adaptations are happening in the systems, and one component being out of spec is affecting another and the situation is exacerbating.  Your BMW or MINI will only “self-heal” for so long and then it’s time for some health care.

Electrical problems that are intermittent are probably one of the most exasperating problems for both the consumer and the tech.  Of course, it didn’t “do it” while the car was at the shop.  That’s when our BMW or MINI special tools that store data about the occurrence comes in very handy.  It can be attached to the component, the car can be driven, (or not), and readings will be taken.  At that point, it takes an experienced BMW or MINI technician to run a diagnostics to determine the root cause of the intermittent problem.   We are talking of intermittent electrical issues, and the readings may not be consistent.  Inconsistent readings and/or out of spec usually prove that the component in question is on it’s last leg and doomed to fail completely.
